(Clark) Kent Fischer: School Tosses 4 Dumpsters of Books

With district brass taking a machete to spending, you'd think campus leaders would be scrimping and saving and making use of every available resource. Right?

So what's up with Burnet Elementary School filling four dumpsters with hundreds and hundreds of Open Court SRA reading workbooks? Many of the books were still in cellophane, meaning they landed in the dumpsters before they ever made it into a classroom.

Former DISD Official Sentenced to 11 Years

US District Judge Sam Lindsay has sentenced 60-year old former DISD Technology Chief Ruben Bohuchot to 132 months in prison with another 3 years of supervised probation.

Bohuchot was ordered to surrender to the Federal Bureau of Prisons on January 20.

Bohuchot, who has health issues, requested assignment to a medical facility. According to the Judge, the request will be up to the Bureau of Prisons.

Bohuchot's wife is also ill and was unable to attend his sentencing.

Prosecutors had asked for more than 30 years in prison based on federal sentencing guidelines.

DISD's Ghosts of Scandals Past

by Jim Schutze, The Dallas Observer

If history tells us anything, the recent security crackdown at DISD signals doom for its superintendent.

Uh-oh. Have I been here before? It's the day before Halloween. I am at Dallas Independent School District headquarters, and I am already seeing ghosts.

Quote of the Week: Nancy Bingham

Regarding the possible upcoming "no-confidence" vote:

"I think it's nothing more than an attempt to embarrass Dr. Hinojosa," trustee Nancy Bingham said of the call for a vote. "There are many, many positive things going on in the district academically. Dr. Hinojosa has clearly raised that bar, but these trustees are not looking out for what's best for kids. They're looking out for adults."

It's interesting that Bingham feels that looking out for adults and kids is mutually exclusive.

Live Blog - Board Meeting 10/30/08

Board passes ethics policy with "Jack Lowe" clause! Crowd goes unruly! Board leaves!

It's almost 5:30 and time for another exciting edition of your DISD board in action!

It looks like the auditorium will be full tonight. Teachers are protesting outside.

The Ethics Policy (with the "Jack Lowe" clause) appears to have been pulled from the Consent Agenda so it will get due consideration from Trustees.

Prediction: it's going to be a long night.

It's 5:56 and the Board is just getting here (click "read more" to continue)...

Meet OPR: Dallas ISD's Secret Police

Elite million-dollar fraud squad fails to land even one indictment

Former government agents, law enforcement executives, IRS officials--most of whom held top secret security clearances; these are just some of the qualifications dotting the resumes of DISD's most elite and perhaps its most secret department.

The Office of Professional Responsibility hired its first employee, Donald R. Smith, Jr. on February 26, 2007.

Since then, its documented budget has soared to almost $1.5 million dollars a year.

After RIF, DISD Job Site Shows Teaching Jobs Available

A week after the RIFs occurred, DISD's employment website shows over 50 positions available for teachers.

The site also lists a dozen non-teaching school-level administrative positions, along with more jobs in other categories.

This leads to an obvious question: was the RIF process truly efficient?
